The official Monero website getmonero.org will soon have torrents available in the downloads section. These torrents will have deterministic info hashes, built with mktorrent, and will be automatically published with every release. Most notably, the torrents are WebSeed torrents, meaning the primary source from which the BitTorrent client downloads data is the WebSeed URL. In this case the URLs point to the getmonero.org CDN, downloads.getmonero.org.

getmonero.org torrents

Torrents improve Monero's resilience. Since getmonero.org is currently running on Cloudflare (which is not ideal), if Cloudflare becomes unavailable for any reason, or if the getmonero.org itself is down, users will still be able to download the binaries via torrents (as long as there are seeders and users find the torrents/magnet URIs).

Downloading Monero binaries without connecting to Cloudflare?

If you don't want to connect to Cloudflare at all, your best choice is to use getmonero.org's Tor onion site (http://monerotoruzizulg5ttgat2emf4d6fbmiea25detrmmy7erypseyteyd.onion) and download the binaries from there.

But the torrents will allow users to download binaries from the clearnet without connecting to Cloudflare or Tor, as long as their BitTorrent client supports DHT (with PeX and LSD also helping). This enables the client to connect directly to seeders and download data from them, bypassing the Cloudflare CDN. To achieve this, you can block your computer from reaching downloads.getmonero.org and dlsrc.getmonero.org by modifying your hosts file:

nano /etc/hosts
# Point getmonero.org CDN domains to localhost
127.0.0.1 downloads.getmonero.org
127.0.0.1 dlsrc.getmonero.org

Then open the torrent in your BitTorrent client and it downloads the data from users seeding the torrent. No Cloudflare, no Tor!

And of course, users can compile directly from the source and skip downloading the binaries altogether.
