NOJSCAP: Proof-of-Work based CAPTCHA for websites, but without JavaScript [25-07-2025 –]
Modern browsers are bloated, turning your computer into a playground for exploitation. Having JavaScript enabled expands the attack surface significantly, and intelligence agencies like the NSA are well aware of this, using these vulnerabities for example to target Tor users.
We built NOJSCAP, what may be the first Proof-of-Work (PoW) based CAPTCHA system designed for the web and which works without JavaScript and CSS, doesn't require any browser tricks, is free software, all while being extremely lightweight. NOJSCAP client is a simple CLI tool which works offline, and the installation doesn't require the user to have fancy packet managers like cargo bun npm docker node go snap gem.

Our git repos are here. Based on Forgejo, which is a lightweight and free software forge for hosting and managing software projects.
We boycott GitHub, so should you. GitHub is owned by Microsoft, a corporation deeply entangled with surveillance industries, military contracts, and proprietary ecosystems. It stands in direct contradiction to the principles of free and liberatory technology. Neutrality ends when code is hosted on infrastructure owned by those who profit from surveillance, imperialism, and control.
Beyond corporate ownership, GitHub represents a dangerous centralization of software infrastructure. Its dominance creates a monoculture where one company dictates the norms of collaboration and distribution. Choose alternatives like Codeberg or self-hosting, because autonomy begins with the tools we use.
